Now that Hillary Clinton has thrown her ass into the presidential ring, the 2008 election may actually turn out to be almost as interesting as season three of American Idol (almost). What disturbs me, however, is that my liberal friends really don't think this country is ready to elect a woman president or a black president. (Sorry, Obama, 24 is wish fulfillment that doesn't extend out into the real world). They think this country is comprised mostly of woman-hating, racist hillbillies. As much as I think that myself sometimes, I also think that's a limiting worldview, and I wonder if liberals and left-leaning citizens are sometimes their own worst enemies. Is their mistrust of their fellow Americans rooted in an unchangeable reality? Or is their mistrust actually creating the world they so fear?I don't even pretend to know the answer, nor do I stand firmly behind one position or another. But I do wish some flag-waving Mexican will enter the race—just to make things even more complicated than they already are.
