Hi all,
I just got back from France full of all kinds of new ideas for 3mm madness. Today I spent a few hours working on a test-case for a much larger terrain mat that I'll be working on over the next few days. I wanted to do a new mat that showed both the patchwork of farm fields in Europe as well as elevation changes and realistic LOS. I used a piece of styrofoam, about 20 inches x 16 inches as a test to see if I could get a decent effect. I copied the fields off of some terrain to the west of Toulouse on Google maps, although I used a more green pallet. Once finished I made some super-simple woods by cutting up a green carpet I purchased at a dollar store a few years back and finally made some 2mm buildings by cutting little cubes of balsa wood then painting the tops orange. Worked great!
In and of itself it's not really that great, but it worked well enough for me to go ahead with the large version. The (very simple) 2mm houses look pretty good too, and I'm sure it'd work well for anyone interested in that scale. For myself though, I'm going to stick to 3mm houses, although I'll keep these guys around in the case I ever want to make up a novelty battle mat for pocket war-games. I'd probably glue these guys down to the mat, in that case. Anyways, on to my 10' x 6' mega mat!
