My Short Life As A Rat

Halloween is closing in fast. I decided to take this coming Friday off from work so I can stay up late Thursday night to watch scary films. Hopefully they will be scary anyway. I don't know how many reviews I will get posted though. I'm thinking just one, maybe two, because I just want to sit back and watch some movies. It will be nice to watch some movies and not worry about doing a review. I will probably do them after though if I watch some that I haven't before. Anyway, I decided to watch Kick-Ass yesterday, a movie I've had from Netflix from a long time, and one I have been wanting to watch for much longer than that. A good film, and a surprising one in places. For today I went with a movie called Bottom Feeder (2007).

A scientist (James Binkley) has created a drug that will help people who have been burned, for example, by regenerating skin cells. Deaver (Richard Fitzpatrick) is a very rich man who was burned badly while in a car accident and he wants this new drug. The guy isn't ready to give it up just yet though, since it has never been tested on a human and there are known side effects, which another drug he has created is supposed to help with. Since Deaver doesn't want to experiment on himself, he orders his goons to beat the scientist. The head goon (Wendy Anderson) has the guy taken down to underground tunnels where she then shoots the guy a couple of times to make sure he can't go anywhere. He is then injected with his drug, the plan being to come back later to see if his wounds are healed. He isn't given the other drug though, so he becomes very hungry and manages to catch a rat to eat. The side effects are that a person becomes very hungry but if not given the other drug, then the person will mutate into what they eat. Meanwhile, Vince (Tom Sizemore) is part of a cleanup crew who will be cleaning out the tunnels. I bet you can see where this is going.

I don't think that Bottom Feeder was made for the Syfy channel, but it ended up first being aired there. In fact, I'm pretty sure it wasn't filmed for Syfy since writer/director Randy Daudlin uses practical effects instead of cheap CGI effects. Bottom Feeder turned out to be just okay for me. I didn't really get why Deaver would use the only guy that could help if something went wrong with the drugs as a guinea pig. He has all these guys around to do his bidding, why not use one of them instead? Outside of that, I didn't have much a problem with the story. The crew had a better than average reason for being there, hoping to get a raise by doing a job no one else wanted. I liked that even though the scientist guy was changing, he was still retaining at least some of his memories, which plays into things towards the end of the film. Speaking of the ending, I didn't really care for it either, but it could have been worse I suppose. Anyway, there was some other smaller things that I liked, like humor popping up in places I wasn't really expecting, so it all balanced for me. Bottom Feeder manages to get some bad review, and some from people I wasn't expecting to be so hard on it. While it is hardly ground breaking, I still found it to be a fun little film.

One big place was the use of practical effects. It was really great to see the changes taking place for the scientist guy. It wasn't a quick change for him, as he changes a little bit more each time there is a break in the story for sub-plots. I did think the effects could look a little silly at times, but it was still a welcome break from bad CGI. The acting wasn't all that bad either. From what I have been reading, Tom Sizemore was having some problems and was in drug rehab, if I remember right, which was documented on a reality TV show. This was the first film he had done since getting out. While I wasn't real impressed with his acting here, there were times when I really liked him. You can also find Martin Roach, Amber Cull, and James Binkley.

As I said, I didn't find Bottom Feeder to be too bad of a film. The biggest issue I had with it wasn't really the movie itself, but the sound. After the opening credits the sound dropped in volume a lot. It seemed to do it again late in the film as well. While annoying as all get out, it didn't manage to take away from the film itself. I ended up getting Bottom Feeder on DVD from Netflix, so it can be found fairly easy if you decide to give it a shot. Not the best film around by any means, but it was still a fun one to watch. Give it a shot someday, especially if you like somewhat cheesy creature flicks.
3 out of 5 I don't think I would look good as a rat woman
